Grace
Meaning: unmerited favor
Here I am, a sinner, a wretched sinner
at that. I do not deserve anything, yet
He entangles me in His grace. In all
of my wrongdoings and failures, God
calls me closer, cleansing me of my
past. The atoning blood of Jesus
reconciled me to the Creator. I am set
free from captivity. I am no longer a
slaves. Instead, I can rejoice in Christ-
free, loved, seen, and completely
lavished with unmerited grace.
-Trinity Hammons
Grace is one of the many attributes of God; it is an essential element of God's character. Through grace we have been saved (2 Thessalonians 2:16). There is nothing we could do to earn God's grace, instead it is a gift He freely gives (Ephesians 2:8-9).
We see all throughout Scripture a clear display of God's grace time and time again. Yes, god has always been gracious. Oftentimes people find themselves asking, "Is God of the Old Testament the God of the New Testament?" The answer here is a definite yes. god is three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, beautifully united in one essence. The triune God is the true God, the only God, the God who created all things. There is no other God apart from the great "I AM" (Exodus 3:14).
There are so many accounts of God's gracious acts throughout the Old Testament, to say He was not gracious then is a very ignorant statement. The story of Noah is infused with grace (Genesis 6:8). God preserved His creation in Noah, covering him with grace, protecting him, instructing him, and guiding him in righteousness. God's grace inhabited Moses and his many doubts. Moses did not want to lead Israel out of Egyptian slavery. He felt unqualified in every way. He let his feelings take reign over God's will. Instead of turning away from Moses, God called Him closer. God demonstrated perfect grace over Moses' life. Let's not forget how God preserved His remnant people every single time they failed Him (Judges 10:16).
The ultimate display of grace is found
within the Gospel. Jesus Christ, God
incarnate, died on the cross, clothed
in our sins. He took our place. He made
us well. He reconciled us to God, making
us clean in His sight. Jesus rose from the
grave having fully defeated death. Christ's
sacrifice has lavished us in an overflow of
grace. Grace is greater than our sin
(Romans 5:20). Jesus died for us, the
wretched sinners. That is complete
unmerited grace.
By grace we are granted salvation. By grace we have been set free (Romans 6:14). By grace we are new creations. As recipients of grace, let us also be gracious to others.
Grace justifies us before a holy God
(Romans 3:24; Ephesians 1:6; Titus 3:7).
Grace provides us access to God to communicate and fellowship with Him
(Ephesians 1:6; Hebrews 4:16).
Grace wins for us a new relationship of intimacy with God
(Exodus 33:17).
Grace disciplines and trains us to live in a way that honors God
(Titus 2:11-14; 2 Corinthians 8:7).
Grace grants us immeasurable spiritual riches
(Proverbs 10:22; Ephesians 2:7).
Grace helps us in our every need
(Hebrews 4:16).
Grace is the reason behind our every deliverance
(Psalm 44:3-8; Hebrews 4:16).
Grace preserves us and comforts, encourages, and strengthens us
(2 Corinthians 13:14; 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17; 2 Timothy 2:1).
